Work is an essential part of what makes us human but often brings some discomfort, especially for African remote tech workers who navigate through a maze of red tape to land and keep a job or project.

For many years, global businesses have sought to hire the best talent from anywhere in the world. To indeed provide talent with access to great career opportunities and to build better businesses because of it.

Goal: Hirefreehands focuses on one goal, to facilitate the working relationships between global businesses and African talent hires, especially in a post-Covid world.

What does success look like?

The final solution should seek to create better working relationships between Africa’s top talent and the world’s best businesses—with a selection of project options to choose from.

My Role

Working on this project exposed me to various hiring and talent management processes. I got to work on a team of Talent Management, HR, Engineering, and Product.

I led Product Design efforts on this project and frequently collaborated with a UX Writer and an Illustrator.

Two-way onboarding flow for talent and employers

To achieve a seamless and lean product, I designed an onboarding flow that catered to both a freehand and a partner/client.

Do remote work better with collaboration options

Track deliverables, deadlines, and pending invoices easily with workstream options that accomodate peer-to-peer, contract, and full-time modes of work.

Manage your finances as a freehand or a client

Keying into an often repeated painpoint (making and receiving payments), I designed a clutter-free payment dashboard to provide a clear view of conected cards and bank accounts

Learnings + Achievements

This was an extensive project, and I got to wear so many hats as a User Researcher, a UI Designer, and an Art Director. Outside of UX work, I also got to sit in on meetings with client partners, investors, and government officials. I needed to understand more about how the service that the product sits on was put together.

Achievements:

  1. Hirefreehands got into and raised funding from one of the largest early-stage VC networks in the EU, APX.
  2. UX and Service Research work done on the project laid the groundwork for an investor-backed pivot to Propel, a community-as-a-service platform, to solve for talent discovery at scale.
  3. Hirefreehands(now Propel) has secured hiring partnerships with trusted companies across Europe, such as Farfetch, Mercedes, Orange, and Fairmoney.
  4. Hirefreehands has built a 30,000-strong talent network across Africa, onboarding communities like Google Developer Groups, Ingressive Africa, Friends of Figma, etc.
